Outdoor Service Guides
92nd Mystic is a coed scouting organization based in Medford and Somerville, MA. We offer a traditional and inclusive scouting program to youth in the Mystic Valley area. Our group is chartered through the Outdoor Service Guides (OSG) and we are the first OSG group in the Greater Boston Area. In Fall 2020, we launched the Otter Section (Ages 5-7), with plans to expand to all age groups as our organization matures. We are excited to be joining our sisters and brothers in traditional scouting!
We offer a 12 month program and meet twice/month: once on a weekday evening for our regular monthly raft meeting, and once on a weekend day for events like hiking, camping, service projects, and water sports. We meet outside whenever possible in accordance with the program's focus on outdoor activities and scoutcraft.
Our troop welcomes everyone regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, ability, religion (or no religion), or other differentiating factors.
The Outdoor Service Guides is a volunteer run traditional and inclusive scouting organization.
The organization has adopted Baden-Powell’s “scout method”— a system of progressive self-education that uses these tools:
A scout uniform, motto, promise, and law
A hands-on approach to “learning by doing”
Baden-Powell’s patrol system
A program of activities that focuses on individual growth and takes place largely in the outdoors
An advancement program based on personal challenges, growth mindset, and acquisition of useful skills
An emphasis on traditional outdoor abilities and scoutcraft
An ethic of service and citizenship— which begins with knowledge and awareness of one’s own community
OSG is a member of the World Federation of Independent Scouts (WFIS). For more details please visit the Outdoor Service Guides website.
Otters are the youngest section in our program, for children aged 5-8 (grades K-2). Otters go on adventures, learn useful outdoor and family skills, and participate in age-appropriate service to the community. They are crafting with their hands, working as a group, and camping together with their families.
Resources
Timberwolves are the intermediate section in our program, for children aged 8-11 (grades 3-5). Timberwolves learn about teamwork and building an effective group through games and outdoor activities. The goal of this age is to help the scouts transition from depending on parents to take care of them to knowing that they can work as a team to take care of each other.
Resources
Pathfinders are the oldest section in our program, for youth aged 11 to 17 (grades 6 through 12). The Pathfinder program is designed to empower and embolden our scouts, encouraging them to plan and implement their own projects, adventures, service, and skills. Adult leaders do not plan these meetings; they are merely offering supervision, transport, and making connections in the community when needed.
In addition to being role models for the other age groups, Pathfinders often participate in events and projects independently of the larger group. Pathfinders work on a wide array of badges and can earn special awards by demonstrating their leadership skills and self-motivation.
Resources
Rovers are our leaders and adults who participate in the scouting activities. OSG encourages scouting at all ages and that includes offering a full program of scouting activities for adults. There are badges to earn, camping trips to go on and adventures to be had. You don’t need to be a kid to enjoy scouting.
